History of Truskavets as a balneological health resort

A city in the Carpathian mountains, Truskavets, was first mentioned in the 15th century (1469). This is now the city of Lviv region known as a distinctive balneological health resort. In the early history, it was only an acknowledged center of salt-making. The idea that Truskavets got its name from the Lithuanian word "druska" - salt confirms this theory.

The healing properties of the mineral waters of Truskavets were first mentioned in 1578. The fact that unique mineral waters can serve as a panacea for many diseases, said doctor Wojciech Ochko, and after half a century (in 1721), Raphael Gonchinsky published a textbook "Natural History," in which he described that in Borislav, Drohobych and Truskavets oil is produced, and water from natural sources, with a specific smell, peasants drink and cure with it many ailments. The research of mineral healing waters with scientific background was conducted only in the XIX century. In 1827, the first building was erected for several therapeutic baths. It was from this date that the history of Truskavets began as a hydropathic clinic. Already in 1836 the peat and balneotherapeutic institutions were built, where salt and mineral baths are used. After discovering the medicinal properties of the natural wealth of Truskavets, its popularity began to grow rapidly with each passing year. Then the city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was an expensive and presentable resort, where only wealthy people could afford.

Already in 1947 the history of Truskavets began a new historic turn: it received the status of the city, in newly rebuilt health resorts they began to apply applications of ozokerite and therapeutic procedures using mineral waters. In a short time the resort became an all-Union health resort, well known far beyond the Union. Until 1990, this resort became the most developed in Europe, every year more than 350 thousand people were treated there.

One of the modernized sanatoriums, which have undergone major repairs and complete renovation of the medical-technical base is sanatorium "Shakhtar". It harmoniously pours into the general architectural ensemble of the city, but it is authentic from the inside.
